Dad, Husband, Techie, Dog Lover, Curler,Ponderer – Stuck between labels
I called the site not really a boomer because, while the label and dates put me as a baby boomer, I’m really not. I was born in the last two months of the period labeled as the baby boom. But my parents were children during WW2 and weren’t the teens in American Graffiti or Grease.
As written on the front page (Mike Fitzgerald of the Boston Globe said it more elegantly than I could) “a late boomer like me just doesn’t have much in common with the early boomers. They had Murphy’s Law, we had Moore’s Law. They had LPs, we had CDs. They had color television, we had Atari Pong and the Commodore PET personal computer (and the Mac). They had the Berlin Wall, we had Star Wars -the Strategic Defense Initiative. The early boomers were still living in a world that was mostly analog. People born in the early 1960s came of age in a world that was becoming digital.”
I say I am stuck between labels because I’m either a Conservative Liberal or Liberal Conservative – I’ve never been sure. I believe we need to help each other – but help is a fluid concept that shifts as needs and environment changes. Government can change the world, can change the arc of progress and justice, but shouldn’t have to – if we all did the right thing (But we don’t).
So yes, like a lot of people, when you ask me about me, the answer you get can depend an awful lot on what I am doing when you ask.
